Dubbed as, “The Extremist of Performance Art”, Martiel uses the human body to quite literally deepen wounds that are experienced by “others,” who are vulnerable to the longevity of colonialism.

The artist fully immerses themself into the concepts at hand, often physically harming their own body as part of their creative process.

Writer’s Commentary

What makes Martiel’s work so effective is the full-force in which they intentionally present the raw pain that society ignores. As a collective, we tend to ignore issues such as the ongoing eradication of entire populations of Indigenous people and their sacred land. The artist embodies the afflictions of those who are silenced by the capitalist agendas, in spaces of prestige sophistication.

Martiel successfully holds the attention of those who play complicit roles in their passivity in the very issues that inspire his passions. Their performance is a form of protest, a demonstration of the harrowing reality of how deep rooted capitalism has affected our humanity.
